Protect, Grow, Plant: what your daily picks mean
Your three daily picks each have a different job: keep what you earn (Protect), push near-wins higher (Grow), and get ahead of seasonal demand (Plant).
Every day, your content radar hands you three picks. They aren't just the three "best" pages. Each one has a different job, and the label on the card tells you which: Protect, Grow, or Plant. Together they cover the three ways a food blog wins in search: keep what you've earned, push what's close, and get ahead of what's coming.
Protect
A Protect pick is a page that already earns you traffic and is at risk of earning less. Maybe a top recipe is slowly slipping down the rankings, maybe two of your posts are competing with each other for the same search, or maybe something basic broke (missing schema, broken links, stale dates). Protecting is the least glamorous work and often the highest value: it's much easier to keep a reader you already have than to win a new one.
Grow
A Grow pick is a near-win. The page ranks on page two or low on page one, and a focused update (better on-page SEO, closing a gap a competitor covers and you don't) could push it into the spot where the clicks actually are. These are the moves with the clearest payoff line: "this page is at position 12 for a search people make 8,000 times a month."
Plant
A Plant pick is an investment ahead of demand. The clearest example is a seasonal window: searches for a holiday recipe start climbing weeks before the holiday, and Google rewards pages that are updated before the wave, not during it. When a window is opening for one of your posts, it gets a Plant seat and will not leave your list until the window passes or you act on it.
Why this beats a plain "top 3" list
A plain ranking would show you the three biggest numbers, which are usually the same three pages for weeks. The portfolio approach means every day you see one of each kind of work, so your effort spreads across defense, offense, and the future. Your priority profile (in "Help me pick") changes the mix: Protect my earners leans harder on Protect, Never miss a season leans on Plant, Quick wins leans on Grow.
When a slot is empty
Sometimes a category genuinely has nothing for you, and the radar says so: "Nothing to defend today, your earners are holding." That's not a gap in the product. It's good news, and the slot gets filled with the next most valuable thing from another category.
The list reacts to you
If a pick has been sitting for days ("On your list 5 days"), it will gradually step aside to give something else a turn. Skip a pick and it leaves immediately; start a plan on it and the radar stops re-suggesting it and quietly watches the page after your update instead. The list is meant to feel like a strategist who notices what you do, never a slot machine.
